You need to make sure that your grammar is perfect because it is one thing that would make you or break you in the contests. Creative writing involves tons and tons of grammar and if you don’t know the basic rules then you cannot probably create the best of what you are thinking. Usage of proper nouns, verbs, adjectives with their respective tense should be done appropriately and not to mention, the spellings and use of commas, colons etc also matters in poetry as well.
Your poem should be consistent. Inconsistency is what makes a poem boring and unattractive. If you are seeking the most attention and eagerness of the reader, make sure there is a subtle flow added to the poem you are writing because it is really important. The lines shouldn’t be diverging and haphazard, stay on the main idea and contribute additional thoughts along with it. Capture the subject well and resolve the ideas systematically.
Try not to use slang words or words that are apprehended because this would automatically take the credit away from the poem that you are writing. The words should be soft, meaningful, fluent and strong in their meanings. The rhythm of the words should stand out as well.
